This prestigious community was named after a country in Scotland. First developed in 1938 by Arthur T. McIntosh, Inverness was designed as a rural gateway, patterned after the Colonial homes of Williamsburg, Virginia. Today, the winding roads and scenic landscaping still provide residents with the ambience of country living close to the amenities of urban life.

Housing
The majority of homes are custom built on one or more acres of land. Inverness is home to some of the most expensive homes in the Chicagoland area, and houses some of Chicago’s most affluent residents.  However, Inverness' homes vary in price according to the township in which they are located.

Transportation
Commuters can catch the Metra rail in downtown Barrington for just over an hour ride into the city. Three bus lines run to the train station for more convenient commuter service. A fourth bus line runs to the Spring Hill Mall for convenient shopping. The Northwest Tollway (I-90), is accessible just minutes south of the village. Drive time to the Loop is about 50 minutes. Senior dial-a-ride service is available during the week.

Schools
Inverness residents attend award-winning public schools in Districts 220 and 15. Curriculum includes computer training, foreign language, and astronomical study through the planetarium. High school students attend either William Fremd or Barrington High School, the latter of which boasts a 100 percent graduation rate. Parochial schools are abundant in surrounding communities. Harper Junior College in nearby Palatine, serves area residents with a wide curriculum.

Recreation
Various recreational facilities are available including Buehler YMCA, the Inverness Field House and a private country club. A variety of community organizations include garden organizations and book clubs.

Shopping
Small businesses and retail stores are found locally. Spring Hill Mall is located in neighboring West Dundee and Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg. Both are within a 15-minute drive from the village.

Hospitals
Inverness residents are served by Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights and Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Both provide state-of-the-art medical facilities with 24-hour emergency care.

Places of Worship
One Roman Catholic Church is located in the town of Inverness; many other denominations are represented in surrounding communities.
